Best Tactical Shooters of 2026

Twenty-five 'tactical' shooters launched since 2020. Maybe ten are actually tactical. Here's the honest list — what each one is for, who it's wasted on, and which one to start with depending on what you want from a session.

Ranked by what they reward

Not by graphics or marketing. By how much real squad coordination changes the outcome of a round.

Updated for 2026

Including Arma Reforger 1.x, Ready or Not's expansions, BF6's RedSec mode, and the Insurgency / Squad live-state today.

Every pick links to a squad

Each game on this list has a TGH voice channel where you can drop in tonight with mic'd players.

S-tier (the genre-definers)

Ready or Not — The best modern CQB sim. Slow, deliberate, punishing without coordination. Best with a 4-stack of mic'd players. Wasted solo.

Ground Branch — The 'milsim-but-not-Arma' sweet spot. Open levels, real callouts, sub-30-minute ops. Tiny community, but the right tiny.

Arma Reforger — Largest-scale tactical problem solving on the market. Squad-level patrol, vehicle ops, real radio. Steep entry; massive ceiling.

A-tier (real tactical wins, slightly narrower)

Squad — 50v50 combined arms. Squad lead is half the game. Worth it only if your squad lead actually leads.

Hell Let Loose — WW2 setting, 50v50, slower than Squad, more attritional. Strong if you like the period.

Insurgency: Sandstorm — Smaller scale, faster TTK. The 'shorter session' tactical pick.

Helldivers 2 — Co-op PvE. Doesn't look tactical until your squad starts using stratagem callouts and bounding overwatch. It's tactical.

B-tier (tactical-adjacent, depends on your group)

Escape from Tarkov / Arena Breakout — Loot-extract, more intense than tactical. Coordination wins, but the meta is item knowledge.

Gray Zone Warfare — Same shape as Tarkov, slower pace, more tactical overlap.

Delta Force — Hybrid. Tactical when played that way, CoD-y when not.

RedSec (BF6) — Surprise tactical pick. Bigger maps + classes + comms = real squad play.

Skip / Hype Doesn't Match

Most CoD modes outside RedSec aren't tactical. Most BR games aren't tactical. Marketing copy that says 'tactical' usually isn't — the test is whether your callouts changed the outcome of the round. If not, it's not tactical.

Common questions

Which one should a brand-new player start with?

Ready or Not. The pace is forgiving, the vocabulary maps directly to every other game on the list, and TGH has nightly mic'd 4-stacks running it.

Best for solo play?

None of them. The whole genre is built around squad coordination. If you want a great solo experience, look at single-player like the Hitman or RDR series — not at this list.

What's missing from this list?

Older classics (Rainbow Six 3, OFP, ARMA 2) and recent flops we don't recommend. We update this list quarterly based on what TGH members are actually running.
