Best Realistic Shooter Games — Past the Marketing
'Realistic' is the most abused word in shooter marketing. The honest test: does dying mean something, do bullets behave like bullets, and does the game punish you for ignoring real-world fundamentals? Here's the short list that passes.
Real ballistics
Bullet drop, suppression, penetration tables — not just hitscan with a 'realistic' skin.
Real consequence
Death costs something — gear, position, time. Without consequence, 'realistic' is cosplay.
Real comms
If callouts don't change outcomes, it's not realistic — it's a deathmatch with prettier guns.
The honest list
Escape from Tarkov / Arena Breakout — Brutal loot-extract realism. Death costs your kit. Ballistics are the most detailed in the genre.
Arma Reforger — Realism at platoon scale. Distances, comms, vehicles, sustainment.
Ground Branch — Fireteam realism. Slow, deliberate, no UI cheese, no kill-cam reveals.
Ready or Not — CQB realism. Calls, slices, threat priority. Solo it and you'll lose.
Insurgency: Sandstorm — Mid-realism, fast TTK, very tight maps. The 'realism without the calendar block' option.
Gray Zone Warfare — Newer Tarkov-shape with PvE leanings. Stable, growing.
Common bait — looks realistic, isn't
Most modern Battlefield modes (RedSec is a partial exception). Most CoD MP. Anything with hitscan everywhere, instant respawns, killcams that reveal positions, and TTKs measured in milliseconds. Skin-deep realism is the genre's biggest scam.
How TGH structures realistic-shooter nights
Mic-gated, role-assigned, no tab-targeting your friendlies, no rage-quits over wipes. Most of our active realistic-shooter players rotate between 2–3 games on this list rather than mainlining one.
Common questions
Most realistic on the list?
Arma Reforger by a margin — scale, ballistics, vehicle dynamics, comms net. Tarkov is more detailed at the gunfight layer; Arma at the operations layer.
Most realistic for a 90-minute session?
Ready or Not or Ground Branch. Both deliver realism at session length, neither requires a 4-hour block.
