Arma Reforger vs Arma 3

One is a decade-deep modding ecosystem, the other is the modern engine everything is moving toward. Which you should install depends less on graphics and more on what you want your evenings to look like.

Arma 3: depth

Ten-plus years of mods, missions and established units. Nothing else in milsim comes close to the sheer volume of content.

Reforger: usability

Enfusion runs better, joins faster, and the Workshop makes mods a one-click affair instead of a launcher hobby.

Both need people

Neither game is any good solo. The deciding factor for most players is which one their group actually plays.

The short answer

If you want the deepest milsim experience available and don't mind an old engine and a mod launcher, play Arma 3.

If you want to be in a squad tonight without an hour of setup, and you care about performance, play Arma Reforger.

If you're brand new to milsim, Reforger is the friendlier on-ramp — then move to Arma 3 if you want more.

Content and mods

Arma 3 wins outright on volume. A decade of community work means full-conversion mods, huge terrains, and mission frameworks for anything you can imagine. Reforger's Workshop is far more convenient — mods download automatically when you join a server — but the library is younger and thinner. The trend matters though: new community development has been shifting to Enfusion, and Arma 4 will build on it.

Performance and feel

Arma 3 is CPU-bound and shows its age, particularly with large mod sets and heavy AI counts. Reforger's Enfusion engine is noticeably smoother, with better netcode and much faster joins. Gunplay and movement in Reforger feel more modern; Arma 3 feel is more deliberate and, to long-time players, more precise.

Servers and player base

Arma 3 keeps a steady, older population concentrated in organised units and long-running servers — many operate on a weekly-operation schedule with sign-ups. Reforger's population skews toward public Conflict and Combat Ops servers you can drop into any time, which suits players with irregular hours far better.

Which one for a group with limited time

Reforger, in most cases. Arma 3's strength is the scheduled, three-hour, fifty-player operation — brilliant if you can commit, punishing if you can't. Reforger supports a two-hour weeknight session with four people much more gracefully, and setup time is close to zero.

Playing either with TGH

Tactical Game Hub runs milsim nights across both, plus Squad, Hell Let Loose and Ready or Not, so you're not stuck if one game's group is thin that week. Members are mostly 25–45, mics are expected, and there's no unit application or attendance quota — you show up when your week allows.

Common questions

Is Arma Reforger a replacement for Arma 3?

Not yet. It's the engine platform that leads to Arma 4, and it's more accessible, but Arma 3 still has far more content and organised unit activity.

Is Arma 3 still worth buying in 2026?

Yes, if you want the deepest modded milsim and are willing to deal with the engine's age. Its population is smaller than its peak but stable and organised.

Which is better for a beginner?

Reforger. Faster to install, easier to join, mods handled automatically, and public servers you can drop into without signing up to a unit.

Do I need a big group to enjoy either?

You need at least a few people on comms. Both games are dramatically worse solo — a squad of four is roughly the minimum for either to click.

Do I need a mic?

Yes for both. Arma's whole design assumes voice communication, and Reforger's in-game VON is central to how squads coordinate.
