Tactical Shooter vs Milsim vs Hero Shooter: What's the Difference?
Is Valorant a tactical shooter? Is Hell Let Loose a milsim? Is Battlefield either? A clear, no-nonsense breakdown of the three biggest FPS subgenres — and where to find a squad that plays each.
The FPS genre fractured years ago, and the labels never caught up. People argue endlessly: is Valorant a tactical shooter? Is Hell Let Loose a milsim? Is Call of Duty either? The labels matter because they tell you what kind of squad and what kind of community you're walking into.
This guide draws the lines clearly — what each subgenre actually is, the games that define it, and where to find a community that plays it the way it's meant to be played.

The Three Buckets
Hero shooter, tactical shooter, and milsim sit on a spectrum from 'arcade fun' to 'simulated combat':
**Hero shooter** — character abilities define the meta. Team comp is hero comp. Examples: Overwatch 2, Marvel Rivals, Apex Legends.
**Tactical shooter** — slow TTK, no abilities (or limited ones), guns and angles decide fights. Examples: Counter-Strike 2, Valorant, Rainbow Six Siege, Ready or Not.
**Milsim** — full military simulation, real ballistics, real squad roles, real ROE. Examples: Arma 3, Squad, Hell Let Loose, Gray Zone Warfare.
For a deeper milsim deep-dive, see our What Is Milsim Guide.
Side-by-Side Comparison
**Hero shooter** — TTK fast, abilities high, comp matters most. Squad size 3-6. Match length 10-25 min.
**Tactical shooter** — TTK low (1-3 shots), abilities limited, gun skill matters most. Squad size 4-5. Match length 25-45 min.
**Milsim** — TTK lethal (1 shot often), no abilities, role discipline matters most. Squad size 4-9 (sometimes 50+). Match length 30 min - multiple hours.
The further down the list, the more your squad's coordination matters relative to individual mechanics.
Where the Big Games Sit
**Pure hero shooters:** Overwatch 2, Marvel Rivals, Paladins, Valorant (lean — Valorant has abilities but is mostly gun-skill so most people call it tactical).
**Pure tactical shooters:** Counter-Strike 2, Rainbow Six Siege, Ready or Not, Insurgency: Sandstorm, Hunt: Showdown.
**Pure milsim:** Arma 3, Arma Reforger, Squad, Hell Let Loose, Hell Let Loose: Vietnam, Ground Branch, Gray Zone Warfare.
**The in-betweens:** — Apex Legends — battle royale with hero shooter DNA. — Call of Duty: Warzone — battle royale with arcade FPS DNA, no real subgenre fit. — Battlefield 6 — realistic FPS, not milsim. Looks military, plays arcade. — Delta Force — closer to milsim than Battlefield, especially Operations mode. SOCOM-flavored.
What Kind of Squad Each Genre Rewards
**Hero shooter squads** — built around comp synergies and individual mechanics. Two duo lanes can solo-carry a match.
**Tactical shooter squads** — built around utility usage, callouts, and trade fragging. One bad player in a 5-stack tanks the round.
**Milsim squads** — built around roles, discipline, and persistence. A 9-player squad with mediocre aim and great comms beats a stack of crackshots with bad coordination, every single time.
This is why milsim communities feel different. The skill that matters most isn't aim — it's showing up on Tuesday with a working mic.
Find Your Squad
Tactical Game Hub runs squads across all three genres — Apex and Helldivers 2 on the hero/co-op side, Warzone and R6 Siege on the tactical side, Arma Reforger and Squad on the milsim side.
The culture is the same across all of them: adult skew, mics on, no tryouts, no toxic burnouts. Drop into the TGH Discord and tell the welcome host which genre fits you. They'll point you at the right squad channel.

FAQ: FPS Genres
**Is Valorant a tactical shooter?** Yes, despite the abilities. The TTK and round structure put it firmly in the tactical bucket.
**Is Call of Duty a tactical shooter?** No. Modern CoD is arcade FPS with military aesthetics — the TTK is fast, the movement is high, and there's no real role structure.
**Is Hell Let Loose a milsim?** Yes. Real chain of command, role-locked classes, combined arms.
**Is Rainbow Six Siege a tactical shooter or hero shooter?** Tactical shooter — operators have unique gadgets but no abilities that win fights on their own.
**Is Battlefield 6 a milsim?** No. Realistic FPS, not milsim. A coordinated BF6 squad runs the game like a milsim, but the game itself doesn't simulate combat — it simulates a movie about combat.
**Is Marvel Rivals a tactical shooter?** No, it's a hero shooter. Abilities and team comp dominate.
**Where does Apex Legends fit?** Hero shooter with battle royale DNA. Closer to Overwatch than to CS.
