How to Shotcall in FPS Games Like a Pro IGL
Shotcalling wins rounds. Learn the framework pro IGLs use to make fast, clear calls that your team actually follows.
Every squad needs someone making decisions. Without a shotcaller, you get five people with five different plans — and that's a recipe for getting wiped. The good news? Shotcalling is a learnable skill, not a personality trait. This guide breaks down the framework used by pro IGLs. Already know the basics? Check our squad roles breakdown to see how IGL fits into the bigger picture.
What Shotcalling Actually Is
Shotcalling isn't barking orders. It's making one clear decision when the team needs direction. 'Push left now' is a shotcall. 'I think maybe we should go left but idk' is not. The IGL's job is to eliminate hesitation — not to be right 100% of the time. A bad call executed together beats a good call that only half the team follows.
The 3-Part Callout Framework
Every shotcall should answer three questions: What are we doing? Where are we doing it? When do we go? Example: 'We're pushing B site, through tunnel, on my flash.' That's it. Three pieces of info. Your team knows the action, the route, and the trigger. Practice this format in your warm-up routine to make it automatic.
Reading the Round
Good IGLs don't just react — they read. Pay attention to where enemies have been spotted, what utility has been used, and what the clock looks like. If you know two enemies are holding A and utility is burned, calling a B push is free. This is pure game sense applied to leadership.
Dealing With Disagreement
Someone on your team will disagree with your calls. That's fine — after the round. During the round, everyone commits. Set this expectation early: 'I'll make the calls, we'll review after.' If someone has better info mid-round (they see a flank), they call it and the IGL adapts. Flexibility beats rigidity.
Practice Drills for Shotcalling
Play unranked matches where your only goal is calling every play. Don't worry about your K/D — focus on making clear, timely calls. VOD review your shotcalling specifically: were your calls clear? Timely? Did the team follow? This is how you level up from teammate to leader.
