Hell Let Loose: Squad Roles Explained for New Players
HLL only works when every role is filled and comms flow up the chain. Officer, support, recon — here's what each role does and how to slot into a real squad.
Hell Let Loose is a 50v50 WW2 shooter that demands real role discipline. Unlike most shooters, your loadout isn't 'pick what feels fun' — every squad needs an officer, every team needs recon, every node needs a support player. Roles aren't optional. They're how the game works.
If you're new and confused why squads keep kicking riflemen who refuse to switch, here's the breakdown.

Why Roles Are Mandatory in HLL
Hell Let Loose has a node system — fuel, munitions, manpower — that the team has to build and defend. Without support players, no nodes get built. Without an officer, your squad can't place outposts. Without recon, the commander is blind. The whole game system breaks if any one of these slots is missing.
This is why veteran squads kick uncooperative riflemen. It's not gatekeeping — it's that one ungated role can lose the entire match for 50 people.
Squad-Level Roles
Each 6-man squad needs:
— Officer — places outposts (spawn points), calls strategy with command. — Support — drops supplies for officers to build garrisons. Critical. — Machine gunner — base of fire, holds lanes. — Engineer — builds defenses and AT guns. — Medic — revives keep tickets alive. — Rifleman — ammo for the squad, flex role.
If your squad has 6 riflemen and an officer, you cannot build the outposts and garrisons that win the game. Period.
Team-Level Roles
Beyond the infantry squads, every team needs:
— Commander — one player, calls airstrikes, runs supplies, coordinates squads. — Recon (2-player squad) — sniping plus intel for the commander. — Armor (3-player squad) — tank crew, breaks defensive lines.
A team without a commander is rudderless. A team without recon has no eyes on enemy garrisons. A team without armor gets steamrolled on attack.
The Comms Chain
HLL has structured comms channels for a reason. Squad chat for your 6-man, command chat for officers + commander. Information flows up: rifleman spots a tank → calls it in squad → officer relays to command → commander coordinates an armor response.
New players often try to talk in command chat and clutter it. Stay in squad chat unless you're an officer. Clean comms is a skill.
Find an HLL Squad That Knows the Roles
Public HLL servers are hit or miss — sometimes you get a great team, often you get six riflemen ignoring the officer. The TGH Hell Let Loose lane runs structured nights with full role coverage and an officer who knows what they're doing.
Operator Path lane, 10-minute voice gate to unlock. Mic required.
FAQ: Hell Let Loose for New Players
Is HLL hard for new players? The shooting isn't — the systems are. The role/node/garrison stuff takes a few rounds to internalize. Running with a coached squad shortcuts that hard.
What role should I start with? Rifleman or medic. Both are forgiving and let you learn map flow.
Do I need to know WW2 history? No, but it helps appreciate the atmosphere. Game is great either way.
