Best Controller Settings for FPS Games in 2026
Dead zones, aim assist curves, sensitivity — the exact controller settings that top console players use to compete with PC.
Controller players are closing the gap with mouse and keyboard — but only if their settings are dialed in. Default controller settings in most games are terrible for competitive play. Here's how to configure dead zones, sensitivity, and aim assist to maximize your accuracy. For the broader settings picture, see our FPS settings guide.
Dead Zones: As Low as Possible
Dead zones determine how far you push the stick before input registers. Lower = more responsive. Start at 5% for both left and right sticks. If you get stick drift, increase by 1% until it stops. Most pros play between 3-7%. Zero drift at 5%? Keep it there.
Sensitivity: The Two-Number System
Use different sensitivities for horizontal and vertical aim. Horizontal should be higher (5-7 range) for fast target switching. Vertical should be lower (3-5 range) since you rarely need to snap up/down quickly. ADS sensitivity should be 0.8-1.0x of your base sensitivity.
Aim Assist Curves
Most games offer Standard, Linear, and Dynamic aim assist curves. For beginners, Standard provides the most help with tracking. For advanced players, Linear gives you raw, predictable stick response with no acceleration. Dynamic is a middle ground. Start with Standard, graduate to Linear as you improve.
Trigger Stops & Back Buttons
If your controller supports trigger stops, enable them. Full trigger pull wastes milliseconds. Back buttons (or paddles) let you jump, slide, and crouch without taking your thumb off the right stick — this is a massive advantage. You don't need an expensive elite controller; even $30 back button attachments work.
Game-Specific Recommendations
Warzone: 6/6 sensitivity, Standard curve, 0.85 ADS multiplier. Apex: 4/3 sensitivity, Linear, no deadzone. Siege: 30/30 sensitivity (game-specific scale), 5 deadzone. Adjust from these baselines based on your warm-up performance. If you're overshooting targets, lower sensitivity. Undershooting? Raise it.
